0.1.1. What is the Red Hot Mamas Program?Red Hot Mamas is the nation’s largest menopause management education program. Its mission is to broaden the base of women’s knowledge about menopause and empower them to become educated healthcare consumers and active participants in the management of their menopause. Our monthly program series is licensed to hospitals and large physician practices across the country. Each licensed facility receives a complete turnkey program manual, consulting services and all of the necessary tools to implement a successful Red Hot Mamas program. The community-based programs are offered free to women and their families, and provide valuable menopause-related healthcare information and psychosocial support to optimize their health as they approach menopause and beyond. The concept of Red Hot Mamas originated in 1991 by Karen Giblin, in Ridgefield, Connecticut. Interest rapidly spread, as can be attested to the growing numbers of licensed programs across the country. Our programs have achieved national recognition for their commitment to defining the pathway to good health – through advocacy, education, support and research. Recognizing that leadership in the menopause healthcare services arena was sorely needed, Red Hot Mamas increased its educational efforts and is currently considered the largest menopause management education program in North America, delivering services which cater to the needs of this growing market. On average, attendance at these programs ranges from 35 to 275 women each month. Included with every licensed program are PowerPoint slide kits and learning objectives which directly correspond with the Red Hot Mamas curriculum – these educational tools are created for and used by medical specialists at each program. Information is delivered by healthcare professionals on the physiologic and emotional changes that may occur at menopause. Topics address important areas of concern – medical issues, quality of life issues and treatment options. Psychosocial support is provided through our group activities such as our walking groups. All program attendees benefit from programs through a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach. They receive valuable menopause healthcare information, specific product information, and interact with peers in the health organization’s supportive environment. We believe better healthcare translates into an increased quality of life and improved outcomes. Our goal is to expand Red Hot Mamas’ recognition, membership and leadership status in women’s healthcare education, to position our continued success in the future and provide superior health outcomes to women as they approach menopause and beyond. Our program is a successful model for excellence in menopause healthcare education and is tailored specifically to each health organization’s needs to ensure excellent health results for all women. Red Hot Mamas Activities As part of our ongoing commitment to promoting healthy living, Red Hot Mamas incorporates ways of promoting physical fitness into our programs. Walking groups and dancing groups are some of our most popular ways of becoming involved in the Red Hot Mamas community. These groups not only provide a great way to become physically active but also provide women with the social support that is so important during the menopausal years. Women enjoy hearing what other people have to say about their experiences and also benefit from sharing their experiences with others. If you would like to see a Red Hot Mamas activity started at your program, please contact your program director for details.
